I, your trusty Punky Chef, have a new friend to introduce to you: Let’s call him Wino Mike! (Because it rhymes with “DynoMite” and I love that, and it’s my blog, so there.) Wino Mike owns a wonderful wine store called Storyteller Wine Co. in Portland, Oregon and has agreed to be our punky semmolier here and give us some great recommendations for certain dishes. So, always keep an eye out for the Story Teller icon, and now… Wino Mike, TAKE IT AWAY!

Hello Punky Chefs!  Glad to be  here.  And for my first trick, I will suggest a wine for the Mexican Free-Range Chicken Soup, described in the previous post.

Gru-v baby! That’s what the Wino says for this down home spicy chicken soup. Because if you were to bring a pot of this soup to my house I’d probably reach for a bottle of white from Austria made with the Grüner Veltliner grape. It’s a wine that is spicy and tangy, but not so oaky that it gets in the way. It has all the acidity you will need to match the spice of the soup and a signature note of white pepper and often a dill or gherkin pickle quality which will go nicely with the veggies. Hey – they don’t call Grüner Veltliner the vegetarian’s grape for nothing!

Also, if you buy an Austrian white, chances are pretty good the grapes were organically farmed, so how perfect for the Punky Chef and her free-range, farmers-market-whenever-possible M.O., eh? And even more perfect: you can find really quaffable bottles of Grüner Veltliner for a very reasonable price these days. In most American cities you should be able to find one-liter bottles of Austrian Grüner Veltliner (some with screwcaps or old-fashioned pop bottle tops) for about $10.00 to $15.00. A nice, inexpensive, zippy white to go along with your down home spicy chicken soup. Gru-v baby!
